Today’s state of the garden: Two rows of beds down, many more to go. Our first WWOOFer also helped us quickly create that brush fence that’s barely visible around the perimeter. Its main purpose is to stop the honeysuckle, wild roses, blackberries and other extremely fast growing vines along the hill from overtaking the garden as they did last year. The fence will support them for a natural boundary and give us a visual reminder of when to trim back the growth.

The old silo at the base of the hill, where the barn used to stand. It’s full of glass and metal from previous residents, but we’re working to clean it out and put it to good use.

The complete high-security, perfect for outdoor brooding chicken tractor #1. It’s got wheels on the back so it can be maneuvered around at night when the chickens are all up and roosting. Our first moving attempts were during the day and luckily didn’t include any escapees. Future structures will be lighter and easier to move, but this one was built for the specific purpose of protecting chicks until they can transition into the main coop.

The actual slope of the main garden, and some of our attempts at beds/swales/berms to slow down water and keep it at root level for the plants.

This may just look like a mound of brambles and old branches, but it’s the start of the first hugelbeet as we experiment with hugelkultur.
